3. What are the real benefits of Kindermusik other than the obvious enjoyment of the activities?

Real benefits resulting from consistent and prolonged participation in Kindermusik classes are many folds. Most notable is the increased bonding between parents and children from the joy of interaction through Kindermusik activities. Such positive emotional environment provides fertile ground for growing and learning. At the same time, children gain immense confidence and motivation in participating in the learning.

Besides musical development, Kindermusik's extensively diverse and child centered activities also bring about visible improvement in physical, language, cognitive (reasoning, spatial, mathematical, and creative skills), and social developments.

As music challenges the listening ear, this very basis of musical engagement helps to enhance the child's attention span and sharpens his focus. Other benefits such as aural discrimination and discernment as well as listening facuity are also evident.

4. What's the difference between Kindermusik and a program that starts the children on piano or violin early?

A. The fundamental difference is that Kindermusik recognizes the learning needs of young children. The development of musical abilities and knowledge needs to be supported by, first and foremost, a spontaneity and passion for the art. Kindermusik prepares these important foundations by age appropriate, interesting and fun activities that promote vocal development, ear training, motor skills and coordination, rhythmic and pitch aptitude, awareness of extensive musical styles, genres, concepts and timbres.

By engaging children in musical activities that are interactive, natural, fun and stimulating without challenging them prematurely to the rigors of instrumental practices, Kindermusik paves the way for future musicians or music learners who are much more motivated and musical, who instinctively strive to create good music rather than simply passing the exams!

What is remarkable is that the diversity and thoroughness of the Kindermusik program also provides total development in these young children. The outcome is a child who is not only musical, but is also happy, spontaneous, creative, articulate, expressive, and a lifelong learner who enjoys challenges.

5. Why does Kindermusik only use simple percussion instruments rather than more formal instruments like piano or violin?

Playing instruments like piano and violin require very specific physiological preparedness. Developing proficiency at these instruments also require disciplines that are inappropriate to expect of young children.

At Kindermusik, simple percussion instruments like the rhythm sticks, jingles, shakers, drums, and a host of interesting and diverse percussion instruments, both tonal and rhythmic, are used as tools to promote learning. Not only do instrumental play activities promote beat awareness, motor coordination and fine motor development, at Kindermusik we encourage creative exploration of instruments by the child to help build vocabulary and lateral thinking. Instruments are also experiential tools to teach musical concepts and ideas.

Kindermusik provides a sound foundation in musicianship from infancy. This crucial stage nurtures the child's continuing motivation in later musical pursuits, and prepares her well in all the elements of musical learning - listening skills, rhythmic and tonal proficiency, notation (through the Young Child curriculum), motor coordination, grasp of musical concepts and knowledge, and above-all, expressiveness. Having all these elements in place, a Kindermusik child will have a great advantage over others who do not possess these prerequisites when she begins her instrumental studies.

6. What can a newborn baby learn from being in the Village Class? Will it not be more effective to begin such classes after they turn one?

A. Research has shown that a baby's brain is capable of receiving stimulation as soon as he/she is born. At birth the brain consists of millions of individual cells that have no ability on their own. Post birth experiences, when repeated, will cause these brain cells to connect, forming neural pathways. It is these pathways that are the basis of the brain's thinking functions. With positive reinforcements, the pathways will strengthen and be protected by myelin, which make the brain more capable. 0 -3 years is the critical window of opportunities when the brain is most active.

In Kindermusik Village classes, parents and babies are involved in joyful and meaningful musical activities. Parents are then encouraged to continue the process at home with the support of Kindermusik home materials. With the help of Foundations of Learning statements that explain the benefits of the different activities, parents pick up tips, ideas, repertoire of games, songs, rhymes etc to interact with baby, and in the process, develop strong bond and help stimulate baby's brain positively.

7. What are the qualifications and qualities of Kindermusik Educators?

All Kindermusik Educators are certified by Kindermusik International after having successfully completed the training. Before enrolment in the Kindermusk Educator training, candidates have to pass a stringent pre-qualifying process which determines their musicality, command of the English language, suitability in working with young children, and attitude. What makes Kindermusik educators special is the fact that they come from very diverse careers, having chosen to teach Kindermusik out of love and appreciation for the program and working with children..

8. Why must the Home Materials be a mandatory purchase?

Kindermusik's uniqueness stems from the fact that it recognizes parents as the child's best teacher. Besides attending classes with their child, parents can help the child derive much more benefits from the activities experienced in class by playful engagement in these activities at home.

The Home Materials support this intention marvelously. The Home CD contains all the songs, chants and music taught in class. The Journal / Home Activity Book, besides containing the lyrics and notation for the songs and chants on the CD, also provides many great ideas for fun activities parents may share with their child at home.

These materials will last a long time. Satisfied parents have often told us how the entire family including other siblings have benefited from these activities at home. We have also observed keener participation, and enhanced ability to focus, with children who use their home materials regularly.
