Funny things happen when music and laughter come together. The laughs last longer.
Not in the sense that a 10-minute giggle fit becomes a 30-minute giggle fit, but when you pair these two together-music and humor-you provide a lifelong feather in your child's mind, tickling her ability to laugh at herself, relieve stress, and develop a kind of quality that draws people toward her.
| Your Baby-newborn to 1 ½ years |
|
Anticipating that first funny
Your baby's first laugh comes around 4 months of age, usually in response to something pleasant, like a tummy rub. Around 9 months, she's laughing at something she anticipates-like seeing your happy face, wide-eyed in surprise, playing Peek-a-boo. By her first year, she's already getting tickled over a play on words.
You can help develop your baby's sense of humor by laughing with her, reflecting her smile. As she grows, this little singing game, "This Little Light of Mine," grows with her and her developing sense of humor.
This Little Light of Mine
Under 9 months. Sing this song while you massage your baby, using a heart-shaped motion over her belly. Sit up straight and relax. Show her your smiling face, and smile with her.
9 months. At the end of "This little light...," say, "Where is it?" and stop, eyes wide, and pause in silence. Watch baby's reaction, hold the pause, then tickle her belly and sing "there's my light!" and continue on with the song.
12 months. By now, you can get giggles by changing up the verses. Sing the same melody but with the words, "Where is baby's nose, nose, nose, nose?" At the end of the verse, point to your baby's belly instead. Watch her response. If she giggles, continue to play.

Rosey is funny
When you're a toddler, running equals funny. This new found physical control makes games like "Ring Around the Rosey" a huge hit.
Combine physical games with music and you're giving your toddler something to laugh about, learn more words, and develop coordination.
Rosey can fall down or do the silly walk
Explore lots of ways Rosey can "All Fall Down." Do movements your toddler finds funny, like playing chase or running.
Instead of saying "All Fall Down," say "We All Chase Around." Chase your toddler around the room, then come back to the circle for another movement.
Tip: Ask your toddler for ideas about other movements. Think about something you did together earlier that day, like driving in the car, or swinging on the swings. Start with a motion that's familiar.
Other movement words:
- We all jump up and down
- We all fly around
- We all fall laughing
- We all wiggle around
- We all waddle around
- We all spin around

Your Preschooler3 to 5 years
|
The "A's" and "B's" of the funnies
She may be using a shoe for a phone or calls someone by the wrong name. She's misnaming objects and making silly rhymes. Your preschooler has new control of language, and she's making fun of it.
Laugh at these "jokes" when she uses wholesome, good-natured situations, even though what she perceives as funny is altogether too obvious for you. Telling your preschooler to stop being silly or quit fooling around inhibits this process.
Apples and Bananas
Sing this song together and play to your preschooler's strength of mixing words up a bit when you change the vowels.
"I like to eat, eat, eat, apples and bananas.
I like to eat, eat, eat, apples and bananas.
Verse 2. Subsitute the "ate" sound.
I like to ate, ate, ate,
ayples and banaynays.
Verse 3. I like to eet...eeples and baneenees.
Verse 4. I like to ite...iples and baninis.
Verse 5. I like to ote...oples and banonos.
Verse 6. I like to oot...ooples and banoonoos. |

Your Young Child5 to 7 years |
|
Riddle me a giggle
Your young child's sense of humor is showing off a bit. When he makes jokes, he's showing you how well he has mastered a word or a concept.
Your young child finds things funny in juxtaposition-things that don't make sense, have double meanings, things like that. And he needs that playful balance between the "big boy" stuff and the childish stuff, plus sharing a laugh with you.
Jokes you can both laugh about:
What is smarter than a talking parrot? A spelling bee.
What games do cows play? Moosical chairs.
Why did the elephant wear striped pajamas? Because he didn't want to be spotted.
What other jokes can you two create together? |
